Job Description ProspectBlue is partnered with an equipment manufacturing company seeking a Director of Finance and Accounting to join its team in Ashland, Virginia. This is a high-visibility position that will report directly to the CEO. Overview The Director of Finance and Accounting is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the organization's financial performance, reporting, and operations.
This position combines strategic financial leadership with hands-on technical accounting and controllership functions to ensure accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. The role drives financial performance while supporting the organization's long-term goals. Key Responsibilities: Financial Leadership Partner with the CEO and senior leadership to design financial strategies supporting short- and long-term objectives.
Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning to drive growth and profitability. Provide insights and recommendations to enhance financial performance and strategic decision-making. Optimize cash utilization in margin, pricing, inventory, payables, and receivables.
Manage relationships with investors, banks, auditors, and other external stakeholders. Identify and mitigate financial risks, ensuring strong internal controls and regulatory compliance. Accounting and Controllership Oversee preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP/IFRS.
Manage general ledger activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial close processes. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, including filings. Supervise accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash flow management.
Implement and maintain financial systems to streamline operations and reporting. Maintain and update accounting policies and procedures to align with best practices. Technical Responsibilities Lead and improve A/R and Payables functions.
Design and enforce internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accuracy. Coordinate internal and external audits, ensuring compliance and accuracy. Manage complex accounting issues such as revenue recognition, lease accounting, and stock-based compensation.
Produce detailed financial reports and analysis for management and stakeholders. Oversee fixed asset management, including depreciation schedules and capital expenditure tracking. Monitor and report key financial metrics with data integrity across all systems.
Leadership and Team Management Mentor and develop a team of finance and accounting professionals, fostering accountability and continuous improvement. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (sales, operations, HR, IT, etc.) to align financial objectives with business processes. Drive process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of financial operations
Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred. 10+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience, with 5+ years in a senior leadership role. Strong technical accounting expertise with deep knowledge of GAAP, tax regulations, and financial reporting.
Proven controllership experience including general ledger management, financial close processes, and audit coordination. Proficiency with financial software and ERP systems (QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle, or similar). Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Strong communication and leadership abilities with experience managing high-performing teams. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities. Preferred Skills Experience in distribution or manufacturing.
Knowledge of international accounting standards and multi-entity financial management. Familiarity with financial modeling, data analytics, and advanced Excel skills. Strategic and operational mindset with a hands-on approach to technical accounting challenges.
Work Environment Full-time position, primarily office-based with potential for hybrid arrangements. Occasional travel may be required for stakeholder, auditor, or site meetings. Work Authorization Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
