Summary: A Counselor’s role is to help students identify, manage and overcome mental and emotional issues that are adversely affecting their education. Will listen to students and ask questions to help them understand their problems and develop strategies to improve their lives. He/she will work cooperatively with staff to monitor and support students’ progress and transition out of services. Will work with individuals, groups and families and help provide community resources as needed.


Duties and Responsibilities: For an assigned caseload of students –

  • Assess students’ counseling needs as they relate to educational goals, future planning and available services.
  • Maintain contact with parent(s)/guardian(s) regarding students’ progress.
  • Provide applicable and essential case management services.
  • Assist with crisis response as needed.
  • Provide updates regarding students' progress to school district representatives.
  • Consult and collaborate with other professionals regarding students’ treatment, progress and delivery of services.
  • Participate in team meetings, e.g. Individualized Education Program (IEP), Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), Student Assistance Program (SAP), etc., as required by the school district.
  • Submit IEP progress monitoring and Medical Assistance (MA) reporting as required by the school district.
  • Keep case records.
  • Attend staff and school meetings, in-services, and workshops.
Requirements:

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related mental health field.
  • Holds or is pursuing a license as a mental health care professional, i.e. LSW, LCSW, LPC or LMFT.
  • Compassionate and caring of students and families.
  • Comfortable with building personal relationships and dedicated to helping others.
  • Work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with students, families, colleagues, and community resources.
  • Empathetic and supportive with mentorship and leadership skills.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with multiple students and expectations.
  • Calm and cool-headed with a positive attitude.
  • Self-directed, self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Proficient written and spoken communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills; organized and able to prioritize.
  • Able to organize and manage files, schedules, dates, and information.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
