Job Description
A Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for conducting complex tests on blood, body fluids, tissues, and other clinical specimens. These tests help physicians diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases. MLTs ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results while maintaining strict standards of quality control and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Collect, prepare, and analyze biological samples using specialized equipment and techniques.
Perform tests in various laboratory departments such as:
Hematology
Microbiology
Clinical Chemistry
Immunology
Blood Bank/Transfusion Services
Urinalysis
Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and ensure proper calibration.
Record and interpret test results, ensuring accuracy and precision.
Communicate critical findings to physicians and other healthcare professionals promptly.
Follow protocols for specimen handling, storage, and disposal.
Maintain lab documentation and participate in quality assurance and proficiency testing.
Adhere to health and safety regulations and infection control protocols.
Train and supervise laboratory assistants or junior staff if required.
Qualifications:
Education: Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science.
Certification: Certification/licensure by a recognized body (e.g., ASCP, CSMLS, AMT, or national regulatory authority).
Experience: Clinical laboratory experience (may vary by employer).
Skills and Competencies:
Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures and scientific techniques.
Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS).
