Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Inpatient Medical Coder to accurately assign diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient hospital accounts while ensuring compliance with ICD-10 coding guidelines and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will have strong inpatient facility coding experience, excellent knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and MS-DRG assignment, and the ability to maintain productivity and coding accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Review inpatient medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes.
- Abstract clinical information from patient records in accordance with official coding guidelines.
- Validate accurate Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MS-DRG) assignment.
- Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) and Quality teams to ensure documentation supports accurate coding.
- Generate physician queries when additional documentation or clarification is required.
- Maintain assigned work queues and ensure records are coded within established turnaround times.
- Meet productivity expectations of approximately 16–17 inpatient charts per day while maintaining high coding quality.
- Stay current with coding guideline updates, regulatory changes, and industry best practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of recent inpatient facility coding experience.
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and MS-DRG assignment.
- Experience with inpatient hospital coding and medical record abstraction.
- Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and disease processes.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while meeting productivity and quality standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience coding for Trauma Level I or Trauma Level II hospitals.
- Experience collaborating with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) teams.
- Familiarity with Medicare inpatient coding regulations and compliance requirements.
Required Certifications
Candidates must possess one of the following active certifications:
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC)
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
