Job Summary:
The Specialty Pharmacist is responsible for dispensing and overseeing dispensing and patient care activities associated with the specialty pharmacy. The specialty pharmacist provides clinical pharmacy services to the company and consumer through the appropriate evaluation of physician orders, and safe and efficient dispensing of medications, supplies, and administration equipment. The specialty pharmacist supervises the activities of the specialty pharmacy support personnel, as well as quality control and performance improvement procedures.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assists in the development and implementation of a plan to grow the specialty pharmacy department while maintaining profitability.
- Develops and maintains relationships with drug and manufacturer’s reps.
- Works with marketers to build collaborative relationships with referral sources.
- Works within the department to manage inventory and accounts receivable.
- Assists in implementation of accreditation standards.
- Aligns and pursues work activities to achieve the mission and business priorities of the organization.
- Develops and implements plans, practices and processes to better achieve organizational goals.
- Encourages and inspires specialty department staff through a positive work environment.
- Supervises, instructs and evaluates pharmacy support staff.
- Uses available resources to gather information on drugs equipment, and patient monitoring.
- Assists in the maintenance and cleaning of pharmacy work areas, and the completion of quality control and performance improvement procedures.
- Acts as a resource and consultant to physicians, referral sources, and consumers regarding potential adverse reactions, and interactions, related to drugs dispensed.
- Acts as a resource and consultant to physicians, referral sources, and consumers regarding the proper use of medications, administration supplies, and administration equipment.
- Stays knowledgeable of current clinical issues, industry practice standards, and accreditation standards, and incorporates them into daily practice.
- Maintains appropriate documentation of the care delivered to consumers and of drug prescriptions and compounding as described in the Pharmacy Policy and Procedure Manual and as mandated by individual State Board of Pharmacy requirements.
- Assists with employee orientation.
- Completes required paperwork/documentation as directed in a timely manner.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Experience with management of pharmacy support personnel preferred.
- Good interactive skills with employees, referral sources, physicians, pharmaceutical reps, and consumers.
Education and Experience:
- Actively licensed pharmacist in good standing with the Board of Pharmacy in Pennsylvania.
- Minimum three years of clinical experience preferred.
- Minimum two years of experience with specialty drugs preferred.
