Summary of Essential Functions
- Responsible for all drug storage and drug preparation in the hospital.
- Ensures that the pharmacy provides optimal services, meets all legal, accreditation and certification requirements, and complies with all applicable policies, procedures, codes and standards of the hospital.
Educational Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy degree or higher degree.
- An advanced degree (pharmacy or business) is desirable.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Licensure and Certifications
- Currently licensed to practice pharmacy in state Texas.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Must have three to five years hospital training or equivalent training; one to two years in a management position or equivalent training; trained in general use of pharmacy computer systems; and previous clinical experience.
- Must be able to work independently, handle stress appropriately, and work cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff.
- Must be able to set priorities, make critical decisions and respond quickly to emergency requests.
- Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members. Must be able to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, acute care, psychiatric, oncology, obstetric, chemically dependent, rehabilitation and skilled-nursing patients.
Physical Requirements
- Primarily works the day shift tour of duty; additional hours may be asked to work other hours as needed, including weekends.
- May be expected to lift over twenty five (25) pounds.
- Ability to distinguish between numbers and symbols.
- Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity with substantial movement of wrist and/or fingers.
- Walking and climbing to accomplish tasks.
- Corrected vision and hearing to normal or near normal range.
- Extended periods of sitting and/or walking depending on specific duties.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensures safe, appropriate, cost effective drug therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures and protocols. Develops, enforces and maintains policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate and safe drug use.
- Develops and maintains a medical staff approved formulary.
- Supervises drug storage and preparation areas throughout the hospital.
- Provides for the educational needs of healthcare professionals and patients and their families.
- Ensures maintenance of an adequate drug supply. Ensures the integrity of the drug supply. Establishes specifications for the procurement of drugs, chemicals and biologicals. Ensures strict control and accountability for drugs dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock.
- Assures adequate control and documentation of controlled substances.
- Supervises pharmacy personnel. Recruits, promotes, disciplines and terminates pharmacy staff. Develops job descriptions and performance standards. Evaluates and counsels staff on their performance.
- Prepares work schedules and monitors workload statistics. Maintains an appropriate staffing level.
- Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines. Monitors and justifies all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.
- Ensures preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to administration in accordance with hospital policy.
- Administers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys and other required data.
- Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local laws, rules and regulations.
- Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
